HealthRider H150T Folding Treadmill Review

HealthRider is a relative newcomer brand in the UK marketplace that’s been steadily building its reputation for producing treadmills with an excellent spec for the price. HealthRider is yet another string to the bow of Icon Health & Fitness, the world’s largest fitness equipment manufacturer. These are the same guys behind the ProForm and NordicTrack brands. The HealthRider H150T is a mid-point treadmill in the range that on paper looks pretty good value. Good on paper’s one thing, reality is often another, so how did this latest sampling fair?

The assembly is most definitely a 2 person job. You’re unlikely to get away with less than 2 people on this machine as there steps that involve tilting the treadmill onto its side and back down again, amongst other steps that also require a fair bit of muscle. It’s also reasonably fiddly at times, yet overall it’s not actually complicated. At around 1hr 10min It did take us a bit longer than usual but that’s mainly down to the fact that there are 18 separate steps to full assembly. In short, if your retailer’s offering you an installation option you might want to take them up on it, but for those that are used to building flat packed furniture, the H150T won’t present any difficult challenges.

Looks-wise the H150T is, without doubt, a case of function over form. It’s big, it’s grey and it looks industrial. However, we rather liked the industrial look and feel. After all, it’s a machine designed to be a workhorse, not a racehorse. It definitely gives the impression of something that’s been built to do a job and take a hammering which is what we like to see in a treadmill

So it looks industrial on the outside, but what’s it like underneath? Well, the basic stats read very nicely indeed; 3 horsepower continuous duty motor (4.5hp peak), 51cm x 152cm ((20’’ x 60’’) running area, 22 kph (13.7 mph) top speed and 15% maximum incline. That’s a serious spec for a treadmill at this price point. We’re impressed!

With that size of motor and running area, the H150T is a great all-rounder catering for runners of all sizes and all abilities. Novices (even very tall ones) will feel comfortable on the large deck and have plenty of room and, with a top speed of 22kph, even seasoned runners will face a proper challenge. That motor really does make light work of driving the belt so it should last the course and be suitable for long distance training. At 15% the incline is significant, providing  almost anybody with food for thought. It’s mean and had your reviewer quickly heading back down to less giddy heights!

Like other HealthRider models the cushioning on the H150T is softer than most other models on the market. This makes it ideal for those with delicate or sore joints but if you’re a seasoned pavement pounder you may well find this is a bit too soft for your liking. Overall we didn’t feel it was too soft to be safe but rather simply at the softest end of an acceptable range.

The console has several separate LED windows rather than the LCD displays that have become commonplace. While LED windows can have their limitations, they do also have some advantages over their LCD counterparts. They tend to be easier to see in all lighting conditions for a start and they’re also less prone to fade  over time. With this console HealthRider have been quite clever and have managed to get some of the LED windows that display your programme map to display a 400 metre (1/4 mile) running track when you select manual mode. A really nice touch that’s missing from many LED consoles. The rest of the training data is bright, clear and easy to read so no complaints on that front and the buttons are clear and logical. These guys haven’t been making treadmills for as long as they have without knowing how to get the basics right and it really does show here.

In terms of programmes, there a 30 on board workouts which offer something for everyone. Getting started is very straight-forward, simply scroll through the programmes and as you go through the map of the workout is displayed on the LED windows. Just keep going until you see the one you want and press start. It really doesn’t get any simpler than that. In addition to the standard workouts there are also goal-based (target) programmes for calorie, time, or distance. Set your target and start the workout. Again very, very simple. While the console initially does look quite busy with a lot of colours and buttons this is very deceptive as the way things work has been made as easy as it really could be. The H150T is definitely user-friendly – which is refreshing!

The H150T is also iFit Live compatible, so there’s the option of  further increasing your training options. Once you insert an iFit Module (sold separately) into the dock on the console and subscribe to the iFit website you can download more programmes and track your fitness improvements plus the software is also powered by Google Maps, so you can plot your own running routes anywhere around the world.

It’s not feasible to tell you all about the features available to you through iFit live in a quick paragraph, just as it’s also unlikely that anyone can get a lot from it without some time and effort  spent in getting to know the software! This is technology that’s excellent but very much suited to the more patient user out there, rather than those who are looking for a “plug & play” machine. Between the 30 preset programmes, the ‘set a goal’ workouts and the options for iFit Live HealthRider have really made a lot of effort to ensure you won’t get bored, no matter how fit you are.

With a lifetime frame, 5 years motor and 2 years parts and labour warranty, a huge range of workouts, fan, speakers, large deck and big  motor the H150t really does offer a huge amount on all fronts.
