Reebok Momentum T9.5 Treadmill Review

The Reebok Momentum T9.5 treadmill marks Reebok Fitness’ entry into the high end home / light commercial market.

The marketing spiel from Reebok describes all the products in the Momentum series as ‘our ultimate equipment line. Tough, rugged construction….’.

We can confirm that they’re not kidding in respect of this treadmill being tough and rugged. The machine itself weighs 184 kg and due to its size, weight and construction, it’s easily the most sturdy treadmill that we’ve ever tested.

At the heart of this treadmill is a 2.5 horsepower, commercial, AC motor. Unlike typical home treadmills, the motor is independently cooled ensuring that there is no danger of the motor overheating even on long runs.

The Reebok Momentum T9.5 treadmill features the most advanced version of the exclusive Reebok swing arm suspension system. This innovative system results in the entire running deck actually moving up and down. The clever bit is that this provides the maximum cushioning at the point of heel impact, whilst providing less movement further back in the deck which provides a firmer surface from which to push off at the end of the running stride.

The running deck itself is an extremely roomy one being 20 inches wide by an impressive 60 inches long. The generously sized running deck, along with a maximum user weight of 160 kg (over 25 stone!) ensure that this treadmill is suitable for use by people of all shapes and sizes.

The top speed of 18 kph (11.2 miles per hour) is respectable and more than adequate for anyone. However, we have seen many treadmills in a similar class with a higher top speed. The incline variation offered consists of 12 electronically adjustable levels. Whilst this is more than plenty for even a strenuous workout, we have seen higher levels on other machines in this class.

On the surface, this is a very heavy duty treadmill with seemingly lower than average speed and incline. So, is it just the hydraulic swing arm suspension that makes this treadmill different to the many other machines on the market? Whilst the cushioning alone would probably be enough to differentiate this treadmill, there is more. Much, much more!

Reebok seemed to have realised that pretty much no one runs for any length of time above 10 miles per hour and incline levels over 12% are a nice to have, but seldom used. Instead they’ve put their focus into the practical features!

For example, anyone running on at any speed will be swinging their arms as part of their natural motion. If a runner wishes to adjust the speed of a treadmill, reaching for the console to press buttons invariably breaks concentration and is an inconvenience. Some manufacturers have put speed up / down buttons on the handrails, which is more convenient than reaching forward for the console. Reebok’s answer? They’ve built motion detectors into each of the handrails. All a runner needs to do in order to control the speed is to waive their hand over the sensor! One hand increases speed, and the other reduces it – simple.

Another little fucntion that we like is the fact that the machine has 9 user profiles. For each profile, the user can enter their weight, height, age and target heart rate. Whilst there are few situation where there would be as many as 9 regular users of a treadmill, one person could use several of the user profiles with different target heart rates. Perhaps one setup at 65% of maximum heart rate for fat burning session and one at 75% for fitness training sessions.

The console / computer is easy to use and provides all the feedback needed in multiple, clear LED displays. As expected, there are a wealth of flexible programmes: Target time, target distance, target calories, interval incline (with 12 intensity levels), interval speed (with 12 levels), weight loss (adjusts both speed and incline – 12 levels), 3 heart rate control programmes as well as 3 user defined programmes.

A great motivational feature is the fitness test function. Towards the end of a workout, you can select the fitness test and this carries out a heart rate recovery test to determine the user’s physical condition. The results are displayed in the speed window after one minute and range between 1.0 and 6.0 – the lower the number, the better. Being able to have a tangible measure of fitness progress is an excellent means of setting goals.

From an aesthetic point of view, this treadmill just looks like it means business. A great design is something that you’d expect from a brand such as Reebok – we’re very impressed that Reebok have produced a truely usable and unique treadmill!

The Reebok Momentum treamill is the only Reebok treadmill to carry a lifetime frame warranty – a good sign of confidence in the heavy duty design. There is also a 10 year motor warranty and a 2 year onsite parts and labour warranty.

IMPORTANT: This is a very heavy machine! Luckily, the exclusive UK retailer of this treadmill (Sweatband.com) offer a full installation service included in the price. Just free up the space and let the professionals worry about moving it about, setting it up and cofiguring the hydraulics for that swing arm suspension!
