York T201 Treadmill Review

The York T201 treadmill is part of York’s anniversary range of fitness equipment, which has been around for a few years. Has it survived this long because it’s a great machine? Let’s find out!

At the heart of the treadmill is a 1.5 horsepower motor which has enough juice to power the running belt to a maximum top speed of 10mph. The motor is quite noisy when the treadmill is pushed to operate at its maximum speed, but this isn’t too much of a problem as it’s unlikely that anyone would push the speed that much as this treadmill has a compact deck size (40cm wide by 127cm long). The compact deck size means that this treadmill is suitable for fast jogging, but for a full run, we’d recommend going for a treadmill with a larger deck.

The T201 feels sturdy to jog on and the deck is nicely cushioned. There is a powered incline function which is nice to see on a treadmill at this price point and, conveniently, there are also handlebar controls for both speed and incline.

The console is a pretty simple affair with an LCD display in the middle which shows key information such as speed, incline, distance covered, exercise duration and theoretical calorie usage continuously.

Heart rate can be measured using the hand grip sensors, but for the most accurate measurement, a chest belt (not included as standard) should be worn to take advantage of the built-in Polar compatible wireless heart rate receiver.

In terms of programmes, the choice is relatively limited with 5 preset programmes. The profile of each of the programmes is printed on the console, making selection fairly simple and each programme can be set for a user-defined exercise duration. The first 3 of the preset programmes control the speed of the running belt and the final 2 control both the speed and incline.

Impressively for a machine at this price point, the treadmill also has 2 heart rate controlled programmes! You enter your age, and one programme is at 60% of your theoretical maximum heart rate (for weight loss) and the other is at 90% (for a cardio workout). Once started, the treadmill automatically adjusts the incline (you control the speed manually) in order to keep you exercising close to the desired heart rate. It’s important that the optional chest belt is used to take of this feature – the console needs continuous heart rate readings for these programmes to work and it’s not really feasible to be running whilst gripping the pulse rate sensors!

The console also has a pair of speakers built-in, though we think most people would be better off with just using their headphone. The folding mechanism is pretty standard and is hydraulically assisted, which is always good to see!

The warranty on the T201 is the standard York 12 month warranty that is increased to 2 years if the machine is registered with them within 2 weeks of purchase.

Review Summary - In Brief

All in all, a pretty good treadmill that represents impressive value for money! If you're limited in space for a treadmill, this is definitely a great choice, but if you have the space for a larger treadmill, another machine to seriously consider would be the Proform 705 treadmill which has a full sized running deck, more powerful motor, the chest belt that is an optional extra on the T102 included as standard and all for less than a £100 more!
