Proform 5.2 Treadmill Review

Best UK Price              Specification              Pros and Cons              Reviewers Ratings

Proform 5.2 Treadmill from SweatBandFitness The Proform 5.2 Treadmill is one of Proform's flagship treadmills and has a quite a lot to shout about. Please note the model we're reviewing here is the new 2008 model which has a more powerful motor than the previous version plus a bit more on top.

The thought that came to our minds when we first saw it was it looked like an old Volvo - a bit dull but reliable!

However, once we stepped on the machine we appreciated why there are still so many Volvos on the road and have so many devotees - this treadmill has a great sturdy feel to it.

Even with one of our chunkier runners at top speed it barely budged a millimetre! The design is dull, but definitely functional. It also has a large
belt and the new 2.5 HP motor on this model is up to the job. It does feel like it could keep going all day.

The Proform 5.2 comes with a feature called the Competitive Training Centre - the ad people claim so 'you can experience the thrill of victory while racing head to head against a variety of virtual competitors'. Yes, it does sound a bit cheesy but it is good fun. This feature is available on more expensive models but we think this is the cheapest model on the market that currently offers this.

A big factor in achieving your fitness goals is motivation. The more programmes and variety in your training dramatically improve your chances of reaching your targets. The ability to 'race' against even a virtual opponent brings out the competitor in all of us and we really liked this feature.

It does come with 20 programmes, or personal trainer workouts, which combined with speed and inclines offer a good selection and variation of training sessions. However, it would have been better if the 5.2 came with the Ifit Journal Software as this helps to track you progress and plan your training. This feature is available on the Proform 585V Perspective costing about £200 less, although with a shorter deck and no race function.

The ProTech 5TM Adjustable Cushioning helps to absorb the shock on the your joints and as the name implies can be altered from 19% to 33% reduction when compared to running on the road. We like the adjustable part as whilst some love springy decks others prefer the hard feel of the road under foot.

The console does much to promote the 'Volvo feel'. It isn't the most inspiring we've seen but it is actually easy to use and has a good display. You can also see your heart beat (grips or strap) and watch an animated figure running with you!

It was easy to install with good instructions and took around 45 minutes from unpacking to getting on it. Some retailers offer installation on this model for around £90 but we think all but the most DIY challanged would be up to the job.

The warranty is a good one. It has lifetime cover on the frame, 5 years on the motor and 2 years full on site arts and labour.

Available in UK from around £795 from Fitness Superstore.

Best UK Price              Specification              Pros and Cons              Reviewers Ratings

In brief:
The Proform 5.2 is a quality machine and it has to be. In this price range it's up against some stiff competition such as the Tunturi T20 and for a bit more the commendable Reebok 7 Series although neither have a deck as long as the Proform. We feel it stands up well to its rivals and the race function is a definite motivator (and fun) for getting to your goals. So all in all a good machine which we're sure will help you get fit, lose weight or train for the next Olympics with your virtual competitors!
